The View UpStairs Song Premiere - Out Magazine!

http://www.out.com/entertainment/popnography/2013/06/17/max-vernon-view-upstairs-musical-sex-legs

The playwright unveils new musical, 'The View UpStairs,' inspired by the infamous arson that killed LGBT people in 1973.

The UpStairs Lounge Fire, a 1973 arson attack at a New Orleans gay bar that killed 32 people, remains the deadliest massacre in U.S. LGBT history. Now creative polymath Max Vernon has taken inspiration from the event for a musical theater event, titled The View UpStairs.

“It’s shocking to me that most people have never heard of the UpStairs Lounge Fire, given its significance,” Vernon says. “Even as a queer studies major, the fire was never mentioned in any of my classes. Now, with the recent violence and hate crimes occurring around NYC, it feels more important than ever to tell this story and reclaim this event.”

The concert performance of the musical takes place June 24 at the Living Room in the Lower East Side of New York City, which also happens to be the 40th anniversary of the fire and features top talent, including Michael McElroy (Big River, The Wild Party, Rent), Nathan Lee Graham (The Wild Party, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Zoolander), Katie Thompson (Big Fish, Giant), Blake Daniel (Spring Awakening, Hello Again), Doreen Montalvo (Giant, In the Heights), Andrew Durand (War Horse, Spring Awakening, Yank!), MJ Rodriguez (Rent), and Rania Salem Manganaro (Hit the Wall).

Nathan Lee Graham, who was last seen Off-Broadway in Hit the Wall, said he's excited since it's the first time he and Michael McElroy have worked together since The Wild Party, and the role of "Willie" was written especially for him. "The music is quite fantastic. Max Vernon's score is wonderful," Graham says. "He's really got a bright future ahead."

FRISK Me: The Songs of Max Vernon Press Release

http://broadwayworld.com/article/Saycon-Sengbloh-Sarah-Stiles-Chris-Jackson-and-Lady-Rizo-Join-Lineup-for-FRISK-ME-at-Joes-Pub-1130-20121106

Saycon Sengbloh (Hair, Fela!, Wicked), Sarah Stiles (Into The Woods), Chris Jackson (In The Heights), and Lady Rizo (Lady Rizo: Unescorted @ Joe's Pub, The Lily's Revenge) lead the lineup of performers to join Max Vernon, one of the most innovative young voices in contemporary musical theater, in his return to Joe’s Pub on November 30 at 9:30PM.

Featuring an incredible collision of talent from the Broadway and downtown theater scenes, Frisk Me: The Songs of Max Vernon is a one-night-only event that highlights Vernon’s songwriting. With a sound described by the New York Post as “a unique blend of unfiltered pop, 1940s jazz and harmonic brilliance,” Vernon’s three featured musicals include WIRED (Ars Nova) and Sugarbaby (Tisch, music by Shane Parks).

The concert also features Alyse Alan Louis (Mamma Mia), Jo Lampert (The Last Goodbye, Marie Antoinette), Grammy Award nominee Maiysha, Molly Pope (Our Hit Parade, The Material World), Nathan Lee Graham (The Wild Party, Priscilla Queen of the Desert), Lacrymosa (indie singer-songwriter), and Sheri Sanders (Rock The Audition). Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.

Band members include Rona Siddiqui (musical direction/piano), Hiroyuki Matsuura (drums), Ayesu Lartey (bass), and Jared Weiss (guitar).

As a songwriter, performer, playwright, and visual artist, Max Vernon is a veteran of both the anti-folk and queer downtown scenes. With roots in musical theater, Vernon detoured through the pop, punk and Brooklyn indie genres before making his return to the contemporary theatrical world with a variety of genres to influence his writing. Most recently, his musical WIRED received a reading at Ars Nova Theatre with a cast featuring Patrick Page, Matt Doyle, Asmeret Ghebremichael, and Teal Wicks, among others, and was named a finalist for the 2012 Drama League New Works grant. Vernon is a member of the Dramatist’s Guild and currently attends the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU Tisch.

Frisk Me: The Songs of Max Vernon is directed by Sam Pinkleton (OntheFloor, The Lyons) and produced by Lina Renzina (Kate Douglas and The Imaginary Menagerie) and Grammy Award winner Thirza Defoe.
