Max Vernon is a songwriter/performer, playwright, and visual artist based out of New York City. His music and writing has been praised in The New Yorker, New York Magazine, New York Post, TimeOut New York, W Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Toronto Star, and dozens of online blogs. His work has been performed at venues such as Dixon Place, LaMaMa, Ars Nova, Joe's Pub, and Music Hall of Williamsburg. He was also featured on Engine Room Recordings’ Guilt By Association compilation alongside My Brightest Diamond, Kaki King, Frightened Rabbit and others. His musical, WIRED, was a finalist for the 2011 Eugene O'Neill Musical Theatre Conference, and was recently given a 29-hour reading at Ars Nova Theatre, with a cast that included Broadway regulars Matt Doyle, Teal Wicks, Patrick Page, and Paige Davis, among others. WIRED was then named a finalist for the 2012 Drama League New Works grant. An accomplished composer, Max scored the movie musical, State Debate, which was later recorded by a sixty piece orchestra and won the best original score award at the First Run Film Festival, and a CINE Golden Eagle Award.
As a visual artist, Max was featured at the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards' Now Showing event in New York City, where he displayed his art and performed alongside actors Jesse Eisenberg and Lili Taylor. He was later chosen for the ART.WRITE.NOW atelier program, where he painted in front of live audiences in a glass storefront at the World Financial Center. He was also commissioned by Emmy award-winning designer and stylist, Patricia Field (Sex and the City) to create art for the 2010 Halloween window displays at her flagship store in NYC.
Max graduated cum laude from NYU Gallatin, with a concentration in performance studies and gender & sexuality, and is currently attending the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU Tisch as a wordsperson. He is also the frontman for the Brooklyn indie-rock band, DECADES and a member of the Dramatist's Guild. His idea of a good time involves a jug of moonshine, some glitter, and a dusty honky tonk piano. He will steal your grandmother's clothing. You have been warned.
